My Confirmation Name
I chose Elizabeth as my confirmation name, after the saint Elizabeth of Ann Seton. Elizabeth was the first native born American to be canonized as a saint. Born two years before the American Revolution, Seton grew up in New York. She had a high society background, yet she lived a simple, lonely life. As she grew older, she relied on the Bible and Scriptures for the rest of her life. In 1794, she married a wealthy William Seton. Her first few years of marriage were happy and she was deeply in love. Four years later, William's father died and the couple was left in charge of his seven half brothers and sisters. Sadly, William died of tuberculosis in Italy, where they moved to try to get out of bankruptcy when William's business failed. From this point on, Elizabeth relied on God and the Catholic Church. Having lost her mother at a young age, Elizabeth felt a special connection to the Blessed Mother. Finally, Elizabeth started the first free Catholic school in America and continued to raise her children. I chose Saint Elizabeth because she was a strong and faithful woman who turned to God in her many times of trouble. She never lost hope or faith during the sad times in her life and continued to be a role model for her children. She was known for her kindness, patience, good sense, wit, and courtesy which is why I am honored to have her name. My Sponsor Choosing a sponsor is an important part of Confirmation. A sponsor should be someone who is a spiritual role model, someone who will help the Catholic receiving Confirmation, guide and support them on their path to becoming adults in the church. I chose my cousin, Samantha Smith, to be my sponsor. Samantha is 23 years old and was born July 23, 1994. She is a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Virginia where she studied business and finance. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy for high school. Her whole life she has been involved in many activities. In high school she was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Varsity Tennis, Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Track, Leader's Club, and Middle States Committee. In college she was the group leader of the Washington and Lee Venture Club, a club that aims to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and helps students understand the world of business. She was also a part of S.T.A.R., an organization that tutors students in the area. I chose Samantha to be my sponsor because we have been very close ever since I was born. I've always looked up to her as a great role model. In high school, she volunteered to go on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. There she worked very hard teaching and tutoring young children who could not afford school. Most of them were very poor and lived extremely difficult lives, so Samantha dedicated a month of her summer to making their lives a bit easier. Sam attends mass every Sunday and Holy Day and makes sure to keep God in her life. My cousin Samantha is kind, friendly, and nice person who was a great role model to support me on my journey to Confirmation.
